Swimming Pool and Hot Tub Water:

Problems with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Total dissolved solids is a measure of all of the matter (minerals, chemicals, etc.) that is dissolved in your water. In adding water to your pool or spa, you are also adding other minerals and particles. The total dissolved solids (TDS) level increases significantly with the addition of chemicals into your water. As water evaporates, these minerals, particles, and chemical residues are left behind. After years of this matter being left behind, your TDS will become so concentrated that new chemicals you add to the water will be practically ineffective.

Your TDS level will continue to increase so long as the water in your pool or hot tub is not regularly emptied and refilled. The maximum recommended TDS level is 1,500 parts per million (PPM). Below are some signs that your TDS level is too high:

Symptoms of high TDS

How to treat high TDS

It's easy! The only way of lowering your TDS level is by draining your pool or hot tub. If the problem is not too severe, you can most likely get away with just partially draining and refilling your water, but if the problem is severe, or if it has been years since you have emptied your water, you would be better off completely draining and refilling the water.
